Fruitlands is proud to present our 2010 Artist-in-Residence Barry Van Dusen, an internationally recognized wildlife artist living in central Massachusetts. He has illustrated a variety of natural history books and pocket guides, many in association with Massachusetts Audubon Society. His articles and paintings have been featured in Bird Watcher's Digest, Birder's World and Wildlife Art magazines. Barry has exhibited regularly in the prestigious Birds in Art show (Wausau, Wisconsin) as well as in many galleries in the United States and Europe. In 2007, he was commissioned to create the UK Habitat Conservation Stamp (the British counterpart to the US Federal Duck Stamp.)

On Sunday, April 18 at 1PM, Fruitlands presents A Paintbrush for Conservation, an illustrated lecture by Barry Van Dusen who will discuss his travels to Israel with an international group of artists on a project organized by the Artists for Nature Foundation. The project's focus was the Hula Valley in northeastern Israel, an internationally important migratory stopover for birds. In this one-hour talk, Barry will share his explorations of the natural and cultural history of this fascinating country, and convey how art is used to set a new tone of hope and cooperation in this unsettled region.

Van Dusen will also introduce his work at the Flights of Discovery exhibition, running through November 15, 2010. The Oils, watercolors and prints shown at the Museum Wayside and neatly arranged in categories—songbirds, shorebirds, birds of wetlands or grasslands feathered friends, “other nature” and New England landscapes—range in price from $250 to $5000. Though they are for sale, you can’t take them home until the “official opening” on June 5th at an artists reception at 6-7:30PM. The lecture is free with museum admission.

Van Dusen will also have a display in the Ell Gallery at Fruitland Farmhouse of his ornithological illustrations for books like bird guides. Additionally, a PowerPoint presentation of his “process of painting” called “Nature Artist at Work”, field to studio to production, will be shown.

Sign up now for a very special event on October 2:  "Studio Workshop:  Drawing & Painting Birds with Barry Van Dusen".  In this day-long workshop, Barry will teach artists the techniques he uses to create bird paintings that capture both realistic, accurate detail and impressionistic beauty.  Limited to 12 students.

You can also take a workshop with Barry on May 22 at the Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center.  Click here for details on that program - only a few spaces left!
