Plein Air Program FAQs

April 2012

Where can I paint when I come onsite?

Anywhere you want, as long as it is outside. There are 210 acres here; we encourage you to explore the grounds and find the place that you like best. If you want to explore the woods, pick up a trail map at the admissions counter and find a space to call your own.

Can I paint inside the buildings?

No, sorry. We can’t allow any painting or photography inside the buildings.

I’m new to this – is my painting good enough?

Yes, it is. We aren’t looking for musuem quality work (although we’d be delighted to get it!!) - we want paintings from all skill levels. Whether you come here to test out painting for the first time or you are a skilled professional, we are honored that you’ve chosen to come to Fruitlands to practice your art.

Do I have to paint a landscape?

No – paint whatever inspires you. Fruitlands holds something special for everyone – for some it is the view, for some it is the architecture, for others it is a single wildflower growing in a field or a ripe apple hanging in a tree.

Are there any special places on the site that I should know about?

Aside from the evident beauty of the view, the field and the museum buildings, there are a few hidden treasures. There are several ruins on the site: the Willard Farm Site, the old Brickworks and the Pergolas site which has ruins of a terraced formal garden. There is also a New Meadow and a vernal pool that appears in the early spring.

When am I allowed to come onsite?

If you are coming onsite with a punch-card, you need to come during the museum’s open hours and visit the admissions counter to get your card punched. If you are a member you can come anytime, all year ‘round.

What do you do with the donated paintings?

We have sold the paintings at our annual fundraiser auction, and have held onto others. If we get enough donations to include in a special "Plein Air" show, we will do it!
