Digging History

Students in grade 5 and 6 hike half a mile on the Fruitlands trails to find pastureland and a foundation that serves as the last remnants of an 18th and 19th century farm. After learning about farming in those time periods, students become archeologists themselves, digging through excavated farm site soil in teams in our education building, looking for clues to the time period their sample represents. This program illustrates the daily life of farmers over time, and how lifestyle choices changed when farming methods and marketing came together to create enough surplus for farmers to become consumers.
